about

The raga-blues post-punk protest album.

In November of 2016, a few things happened:

First and foremost, I was - like nearly everyone else I knew - trying to wrap my head around the increasingly surreal, fragmented, hostile nature of contemporary society, and the implications of how we were choosing to deal (or not deal) with it.

Secondly, I stumbled onto a particular combination of guitar hardware and software (including a fabulous custom instrument by luthier Michael Spalt) that I found highly inspiring to play and record through.

Thirdly, I revisited some electronic music sketches that I'd come up with a few years previously, and which I'd always intended to write and record guitar parts for. They were mostly sparse modular synth ideas, defined by a stark, abstract, unstable vibe.

So: difficulty in dealing with the world + inspiring old ideas in need of guitar parts + inspiring new way to record guitar = unexpected new album, made in roughly three months.

"You Won't Believe What Happens Next," as a title, is a riff on the ubiquity of clickbait in our online existence. But it's also a pre-emptive coping strategy for a time when each day's news brings a new wave of cognitive dissonance, and the nature of reality itself is always up for debate. This is essentially a collection of duets for one human and a computer, made at a point in time when "one human and a computer" seems to have become our dominant way of dealing with the world, each other, and ourselves.
